2009 Arc-Dane County Awards Banquet

(Press Release) Local Disability Advocacy Organization Honors Volunteers

An attendance of over 140 participants watched as The Arc-Dane County, an advocacy organization with the mission of ensuring the rights of all children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families honored a host of volunteers including an award for the organization’s coveted Lifetime Achievement.
Selected to receive this year’s Lifetime Achievement award was Hermine Dicke, a 97 years young lady who pioneered advocacy work for those with developmental disabilities back in 1957 for what was then known as the Madison Area Council on Retardation. This year’s Teacher-Educator award went to Dr. Joseph Schmiedicke, Dean of the School of Education at Edgewood College. Dr. Schmiedicke is credited with developing Edgewood’s Special Education Graduate Program in the early 1970’s and, more recently, fostering and nurturing the Cutting Edge college degree program for students with developmental disabilities.
